Description

Linen band sampler embroidered with cream silk and linen thread in satin and backstitch with needlepoint lace filling stitches and hollie point. All the edges are hemmed. There is a narrow repeating geometric border pattern which goes all around the sampler with four similar patterns worked in horizontal bands between five bands of cut-work. Each of the three wide and two narrow bands of cut-work is composed of detached squares or rounds filled with geometric and floral motifs, crowns, hearts and brief inscriptions in holliepoint or needle pointlace filling stitches. The inscribed initials are:'W', 'I' and 'M' in the fourth square at the top and in the centre square of the middle row 'P W 1726'.
