Border sampler, wool, embroidered with polychrome silks and chenille threads in cross, satin and Algerian eye stitch with laid and couched work. The sampler is cut to an oval and bound with brown ribbon. A meandering floral border encloses floral motifs and wreaths, narrow repeat border patterns, a religious verse and six lines of a poem by Thomson. Within the bottom wreath the inscription 'A Tyrrell 1793' is worked. The first verse reads ' As the good shepherd tend his fleecycare/Seeks freshest pasture and the purest air/Explores the lost the wandering sheep directs/By day o'ersees them and by night protects/The tender lamb he raises in his arms/Feeds from his hand and in his bosom warms/ Thus shall mankind his guardian care engage/ The promised father of the future age/Pope'. The second reads 'Delightful task! To rear the tender thought/To teach the young idea to shoot/to pour the fresh instruction o'er the mind/To breathe the enlivening spirit/And to fix the generous purpose/In the glowing breast. Thomson'.
