Description

Sampler, wool, embroidered in three shades of blue silk in cross-stitch. There is a selvedge on both sides, the top is turned under and stitched, and the bottom is cut. Lines from the Iliad are worked in Greek. Translated they read 'So spoke glorious Hector and stretched out his arm to his boy, but the child shrunk crying to the bosom of his fair girdled nurse, dismayed at his dear father's aspect and dread of the bronze horse hair crest that he beheld nodding fiercely from the helmet's top. Then his dear father laughed aloud and his lady mother ? glorious Hector took the helmet from his head and laid it all gleaming upon the earth, then kissed he his dear son and handled him in his arms and spoke in prayer to Zeus and all the gods, Leonidas Iliad VI'.
