Description

Linen sampler embroidered with polychrome silks and silver metal thread in tent, cross, stem, and eyelet stitch. Both sides have a selvedge and both the top and bottom edges are turned under and hem stitched. All sides are trimmed with a blue silk ribbon. The central motif depicts a large floral wreath which contains a set of initials 'HS, IP, PIN, KSCD' and the date 1760. Arranged around the wreath are five female figures which symbolise the inscribed virtues of 'La Diligence', 'La Constance', 'L'Abondence', 'La bonne Renommee' and 'La Bonne Conscience', all holding wreaths containing initials. The wide border contains further initials, alphabets, numerals and coronets.
