Production: Biercom, Josephine
Band sampler, linen, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross-stitch with pattern or damask darning and stocking darning stitches. There is a selvedge on both sides and the top and bottom are turned under and stitched. The sampler is made up of horizontal bands of repeat border patterns and rectangles of darning patterns, one band including two flower sprays and another the inscription 'JOSEPHINE BIERCOM 1844'.
History note: Given to the donor by Evelyn Walker in 1924, who had bought it in Liverpool
