Sampler embroidered with detached motifs including sprigs, cupids, baskets, birds, Solomon's Temple.
Linen sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross-stitch. All the edges are hemmed. The detached motifs are a cross between traditional one's (sprigs, cupids, baskets, birds, Solomon's Temple) and those illustrating Portuguese daily life, such as the many characters present worked on the sampler. One of the female figures is black and is carrying a basket on her head. The top left contains a pastoral scene, which unlike the other motifs, is worked in a naturalistic style. The border is framed by an incomplete stylized floral border. The makers' initials 'M:IC' are inscribed beneath a coronet over pierced hearts and birds on a branch.
