Description

Border sampler, woollen, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, satin, stem, darning and herringbone stitch. The sampler features a strawberry border, repeat border and all over patterns, detached motifs, a verse, an inscription and a pictorial panel.

Border sampler, woollen, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, satin, stem, darning and herringbone stitch. There is a selvedge on both sides; the top, which was originally turned under, is damaged and the bottom has been cut. A border of strawberries frames the main body of the sampler on three sides. The upper part is composed of repeat bored and all over patterns, detached motifs, including a fruit tree and two dogs, a verse and the inscription 'Elizabeth Bates Aged 10 Years 1801'. The verse reads ' Tell me ye knowing and discerning/ Where I may find a Friend both firm and true/ Who dares stand by me when in deep DiStreSs/ And then his Love and FriendShip moSt expreSs'. The remainder of the sampler includes a pictorial panel of a female figure in late 18th century costume, detached motifs, a flower and fruit band, a stepped, stylized hill with symmetrically arranged trees, animals and birds.
