Description

Sampler worked with beads and wool with spot motifs including the Crucifixion, the Instruments of Passion and the Lamb of God.

Linen canvas sampler with a cotton patch, mounted on board. The piece is worked with coloured beads with some later woollen cross-stitch. The edges are bound with silver braid. This sampler is unfinished but most of the spot motifs are in place; many of them are religious including the Crucifixion, the Instruments of Passion and the Lamb of God. Other motifs found on this piece are flower baskets, a version of the temple of Solomon, a wreath, a cockerel and pierced hearts. The inscription 'amitie' is worked in beads inside the roof of the temple. Where the bead background is unfinished, an odd patch has been inserted and some crude woollens cross stitch worked close to the narrow beadwork edge.
