Description

White linen sampler embroidered with blue cotton thread worked in hem, running, double running, back, cross, herringbone, feather, daisy and whipped stem stitch, French knots, damask darning, needle weaving, cut and drawn work with needlepoint lace filling stitches and plain sewing. The sampler is made up of two joined pieces of linen; all the edges are hemmed and the corners mitred. Along the top tape loops, buttons, hooks and eyes are symmetrically arranged. The larger section of the sampler contains five inserted patches, four cut and drawn border patterns and the initials 'G E F B' on the bottom hem. The lower section contains four rectangular damask darns with '1894' inscribed on the top hem.

History note: The sampler was worked by Mary's sister at the Gloustershire School of Domestic Science in 1894
