Description

Sampler, linen, embroidered with linen thread in holliepoint and buttonholed with picots. The sampler comprises four horizontal bands of pattern. The upper band contains very stylized floral sprays; the second has a similar pattern to the first but the pattern is formed by open spaces upon a closely worked background as opposed to the widely spaced stitched ground of the first band. The third band has the inscription 'Margret Rippon 1755' worked in between horizontal bands of petaled flowers. The final band has five petaled flowers worked upon a closely stitched background.
