Band sampler worked in polychrome silks containing alphabets, the inscription 'All flesh is like the withered hay and so it springs and fades away', and arcaded flowers.
Woollen band sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, long-armed cross, herring bone, satin, rococo, Florentine and trellis stitch. Two edges are hemmed and there is a selvedge at the top and the bottom. The sampler is organised into horizontal bands in vivid colours and a variety of stitches. the bands are worked in repeat pattern bands with stylized arcaded flower and leaf motifs. The sampler depicts three alphabets and the inscriptions 'All flesh is like the withered hay and so it springs and fades away', 'Dorcas Haynes her work finished the 25 day of the twelves month 1720'.
