Description

Marking sampler embroidered with red cotton depicting alphabets, numerals, a verse and an inscription.

Marking sampler embroidered with red cotton in cross and four-sided cross. All the edges are hemmed. The pattern includes a row of alphabets, numerals, abstract and geometric flowers and a verse which reads 'Jesus, permit thy gracious name to stand/ As the first efforts of an infant's hand, / And, while her fingers on the canvas move/Engage her tender thoughts to seek thy love, / With thy dear children let her have a part, / And write thy name thyself, upon her heart'. In the flower band above the verse a bible motif is inserted and we equally find a row of paired initials, whilst below it short bands of repeat motifs take up most the bottom half of the sampler which also contains the inscription 'M.A. Tipper/ orphan house/ North Wing/ Ashley Down/ Bristol/ 1868'.
