Description

Three bound together samplers worked in polychrome silks and linen thread in a variety of stitches, including some whitework.

Three bound together linen samplers embroidered in silk and linen threads in a variety of stitches. The first panel is worked in polychrome silks in stem, buttonhole, buttonhole wheels, French knot, satin, fishbone, hem, lazy daisy, chain, rococo and filling stitches. The design consists of small decorative motifs, including flowers and repeat pattern bands, and a large rural scene. The bottom is bordered with three alternating flowers and two plants in green, blue and orange. The second panel is worked in red and black satin silk of drawn thread work in horizontal bands. Other motifs are executed in counted thread work in double running, cross and satin stitch. The third panel is worked in polychrome silks and linen thread. The design consists of two heraldic badges worked in yellow, red, black, blue, white, pink and green silk thread in tent stitch. There is also a floral design in a variety of stitches, and also two types of whitework in linen thread. The first type combines satin and buttonhole stitch with drawn work, whilst the second type is buttonholed cutwork with some satin and stem stitch and French knots.
