Maker: Williamson, Sarah
Sampler, wool, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, satin, stem, tent and long filling stitches. A simple honeysuckle meandering border with similar floral bouquets in each corner frames the main body of the sampler which is divided into three sections. On the other two standing boys with between tem a young seated female holding a bird are worked. The central section comprises a swagged inscribed panel with a flowerpot and a butterfly to either side. The inscription reads ' Next unto God dear parent I address/Myself to you in humble thankfulnes/ For all your Care and Charge on me bestowed /The means of learning unto me allowed/ Go on I pray and let me Still pursue/ Those golden Arts the Vulgar never knew'.
