Description

Sampler, wool, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, satin, stem, tent and long filling stitches. A simple honeysuckle meandering border with similar floral bouquets in each corner frames the main body of the sampler which is divided into three sections. The top section is arranged around a central tree with two flowering plants. On one side of the tree a standing male figure, a female figure standing on a hillock and a standing girl are worked. On the other two standing boys with between tem a young seated female holding a bird are worked. The central section comprises a swagged inscribed panel with a flowerpot and a butterfly to either side. The inscription reads ' Next unto God dear parent I address/Myself to you in humble thankfulnes/ For all your Care and Charge on me bestowed /The means of learning unto me allowed/ Go on I pray and let me Still pursue/ Those golden Arts the Vulgar never knew'. The lower section features a central motif of a house and garden with a seated female and a standing male figure on either side. Beneath this design a small panel is inscribed 'Sarah Williamson in the/ 10th Year of her Age 1795'.
