The Belvedere Antinous, also known as Hercules, Meleager, Theseus and Mercury in the late eighteenth century, was considered one of the most perfect representa¬tions of the male nude. The Wedgwood relief has had the arms restored - one is partly and the other almost totally lacking on the original. Antinous is not listed in the 1779 Wedgwood & Bentley, Catalogue . . ., prob¬ably because it was given one of the other names.
