Double paper leaf, decoupé by hand/stamped and painted in water colours. Sticks and guards of wood (11+2), pierced, painted, gilt and applied with flakes of abalone (?) shell, the guards strengthened at the head with ivory. Rivet with mother-of-pearl washers. Front: A Chinese bird seller holding a cage containing two birds, accompanied by a man holding a furled parasol and a woman holding a screen fan. On each side there are trees, and plants in pots. Reverse: An asymmetrically placed flowering tree on a brown ground. Sticks: Sparcely decorated with a split design of sprays of flowers, bowls, a bird, a butterfly, a swan and a man in a boat. Guards: Pierced motifs and painted flowers.
