Description

Double leaf of paper, printed in black. Silver binding on upper edge; silver strip on left and lower edge. Sticks and guards of shaped wood (18+2). Brass ? rivet. Front: In the centre within a half wreath of palm and laurel, bust portraits of George, Prince of Wales and Princess Caroline of Brunswick surmounted by Prince of Wales' feathers with 'ICH DIEN' on ribbon below. On the left side two printed scenes: an officer and lady walking towards a canon near a military camp; and a wedding, separated by printed riddles, that nearest the portraits initialled and dated 'F.B: Junr, 1795'. On the right side: a lady writing at a desk; and a man falling off a knackered horse, separated by riddles, and on the extreme right, an advertisement for HARPER HARPSICHORD. Across the top of the leaf there is a border of caricature busts and heads, which form further heads when the fan is partially folded. Inscribed at the bottom 'Publish'd at Sudlow's Fan Warehous 191 Strand' Reverse: Undecorated.
