Description

Double paper leaf that opens four ways, painted in bodycolour to show either a lady or a gentleman of fashion on four different grounds; pink, lavender, blue and grey. The sticks and guards are of bone, inlaid with sequins.

History note: Colonel Leonard C. Messel (1872-1953); his daughter Anne, Countess of Rosse (1902-1992)

Note

The elaborate and fragile method of attachment is by two rows of invisibly placed chickenskin "ribbon" just below the painted border "ribbon". This must be almost unique in its original state.
