The shape is copied from a Chinese porcelain meat dish, of c. 1740, based in turn on an English silver example, and was used extensively in English ceramics of the period. The prunus relief decoration is copied from a Chinese ‘blanc-de-chine’ original, from Dehua in Fujian province, of c. 1700, and the enamel decoration is based on a Chinese original of c. 1735-40. Enamelled decoration was introduced on plain prunus moulded wares a few years after they were introduced, c. 1750, but is never seen in conjunction on Chinese 'blanc-de-chine' pieces.
