Description

Silver and ostrich egg; the egg with silver rim mount and silver trumpet-shaped circular foot

Silver and ostrich egg; the egg cut to form a deep cup. Its rim is mounted with a deep band of silver, which is plain in the interior, while the outside is engraved with a Greek key pattern. At the base of the egg is a calyx of a sun in splendour with deeply ribbed rays. This and the foot are attached to the base of the cup with a nut and bolt covered by a large silver boss, which is visible inside the cup. The circular foot splays out from the calyx and stands on a reeded rim. The foot is engraved with the crest of a lion rampart holding a Maltese cross.
