Tipped in on verso of t-p for "The House of Life": Drawing of "The Sonnet" by D. G. Rossetti with inscription on reverse: "size of Treasury of English Sonnets" in hand of Christina Rossetti; also note by W. M. Rossetti.
Tipped in on advert at end of book: Table of contents in D. G. Rossetti’s hand.
Various items found loose in book: Postcard of tomb of D. G. Rossetti sent to S. C. Cockerell with message dated 28.12.32; copy of a photograph "A game of chess with Dante Rossetti"; cutting of auction catalogue including reproduction of autograph ms The Sonnet; note on card in connection with the drawing; Royal Academy of Arts card indicating the book was loaned for their Rossetti Exhibition 1973; bookmarker with the word "Affection".
Inscription on title-page: "To my dearest Mother, this first copy. Sept. 1881. D G Rossetti."
Inscription on verso of front endpage: "W. M. Rossetti from [?] Christina’s books 1894".
Ms note by W. M. Rossetti on reverse of drawing: "The ink here is Christina’s writing (the other penciling mine) - Gabriel gave to his mother, for her 80th birthday a copy of Main’s Treasury of Sonnets, with his inserted design (well known) of "The Sonnet". The drawing over-page is an alternative design (I know no other form of it) for the same subject. Date wd be towards April 80".
Ms note by Cockerell on verso of front endpage: "The table at the end is in DGR’s writing. The bookmarker was probably his mother’s. The design inserted in the middle of the book is by DGR, the writing in ink on the back being Christina’s with the pencil notes WMR’s. WMR gave it me 7 Dec 1901. SCC".
