The Agrippan Sibyl Sibylla Agrippo Sibyls
Printmaker:
Rosselli, Francesco di Lorenzo
(Workshop)
Printmaker:
Baldini, Baccio
(After)
There are two versions of the Agrippan Sibyl ascribed to Rosselli. The Illustrated Bartsch Commentary volume states: 'In every respect, the figure of the sibyl is a kind of twin sister to the second version of 'The Cimmerian Sibyl'. The engraving also corresponds precisely to second versions of the prophets 'Amos' and 'Obadiah'. All four prints are surely much later than the original versions of their respective subjects and may well have been executed by an assistant in the Rosselli workshop'.
History note: One of eight prints bought with money from the Engraving Fund at the British Museum duplicates sale and listed in the Syndicate Minutes, 28 May 1880; Duplicate Prints and Etchings, the property of the Trustees of the British Museum (Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge), 21 April 1880, lot 9
Bought from the Engraving Fund, 1880.04.21
Method of acquisition: Bought (1880)
Executed in Hind's 'Broad Manner' style. From a set of twenty-four prints, copied from an earlier set in the 'Fine Manner' by Baccio Baldini. This is the second, later version of the subject, see description.
