Glazed soft-paste porcelain plate, painted underglaze in blue with the 'Mandarin' pattern
Soft-paste porcelain plate, decorated underglaze in bright blue. Circular with sloping rim and wide shallow well, decorated in the middle with a seated and a standing Chinese figure in a landscape with a flowering tree. On the sides of the well, between narrow bands, there are panels of trellis diaper alternating with a leaf or a twig. On the rim there are three flowering branches and a narrow band round the edge. The reverse is decorated with three twigs. Historically, this pattern has been referred to as, the 'Mandarin' pattern.
History note: Collection of the late Dr Hugh Statham (1895-1967) and Mrs Margaret Statham (d. 1970); lent anonymously in 1970 by their daughter, Miss Beryl Statham (d. 1990) by whom bequeathed
Bequeathed by Miss Statham, accepted by H.M.Government in 1990 in lieu of Inheritance Tax, and allocated to the Fitzwilliam Museum
