Note

This portrait was commissioned by the Friends of the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1990 to commemorate Professor Michael Jaffé's 17-year directorship of the museum and was funded by public subscription. It was finished in 1992. Dame Elizabeth wrote of the commission: 'It is always very difficult to do a portrait of someone so well known by so many people as everyone has a view! In the end it has to be my impression of him - one cannot expect to please everyone.' (Letter of 1.9.1992). Later that year, she commented: 'It is marvellous when one does a portrait which pleases most people - it isn't always very easy.' (Letter of 7.12.1992). The portrait was cast in an edition of three, with one now in King's College, Cambridge. The portrait followed the precedent of the Friends having commissioned a bust of Prof. Jaffé's predecessor Louis C.G. Clarke from Jacob Epstein in 1951 (M.14-1951).
