A study for 'Army and Navy', Bristol City Art Gallery dated by Wendy Baron (1972) to early 1914 (cat. no. 311, fig. 219). According to W.B. (p. 357), the time of the painting, and the inscription (see above) may be taken to imply that the two men are reminiscing about their experiences in the different services.
