In 1881, Rodin visited the French painter and engraver, Alphonse Legros, in London, where the latter spent most of his career. On 23 November that year, Legros agreed to sit for a portrait. The sittings took place at the studio of Gustave Natorp in Paris and the portrait was exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery, London, in 1882. Legros saw it there and wrote to Rodin on 6 May 1882 telling him that he found it admirable. The present bronze is one of about 10 known casts, the majority of which were produced by the founder Alexis Rudier in Paris.
