Label text from the exhibition ‘Madonnas and Miracles: The Holy Home in Renaissance Italy’, on display at The Fitzwilliam Museum from 7 March until 4 June 2017: This small but emotionally charged plaquette is crammed with figures mourning the dead Christ. They cry out in anguish and fling their arms into the air as his body is lowered into the tomb. The Virgin faints from unbearable grief. Riccio was a master sculptor and bronze caster; here Christ’s torso recalls classical sculptures that were greatly admired in Renaissance Italy.
