Description

Bronze, thick lacquer patina. Figure of a bearded Triton, with flowing curly hair, kneeling on an irregularly-shaped base. His torso is turned in contraposto. He holds a spouting fish over his left shoulder, supported with his right hand.

Notes

History note: With Copper & Adams; purchased in 1946 by Lt Col the Hon. M.T. Boscawen, DSO, MC (1892-1958)

Legal notes

Given anonymously, from the collection of Lt. Col. the Hon. M.T. Boscawen, DSO, MC, in his memory

Measurements and weight

Height: 45.0 cm

Acquisition and important dates

Method of acquisition: Given (1979) by Anonymous

Note

Although apparently a fountain figure, there is no passage for water to enter the fish from inside. The Triton tails are terminated arbitrarily and the fish-tail seems to be a cast-on replacement. Perhaps an after-cast?

Previously called Italian, 16th century. Purchased in 1946 by Lt Col. Boscawen, with attribution to Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli (1507-63).
