Inscription or legends present

  • Text: Turner's first sketch of Coniston Old Man and on the back the lions of the coat of arms drawn in his Father's shop. This is quite right. Arthur Severn discovered the sketch among those I was going to return to Dr Pocock - of whom I begged it when I saw what it was. I now make it No. 1 of the Brantwood series of Turner's drawings - John Ruskin, 22d March 1889
  • Location: Backboard
  • Method of creation: Graphite
