Description

Silver with cane-covered handle

Silver with cane-covered handle. Of antique vase form with broad curved lip, hinged, domed cover surmounted by a bud finial, strap handle rising above the rim and rejoining the body below the shoulder, short stem with an angular knop, circular foot, and square, straight-sided base. The rim, shoulder, knop, and outer edge of the foot are decorated with applied beading. There are applied leaves with beaded centres at the upper and lower ends of the handle, and on the neck below the hinge and junction of the handle. One one side of the body there is an applied oval relief of a putto playing a lyre, and on the other side, an applied relief of a putto as Hercules with a lion skin and club, and holding a scrolled and twisted object by a chain. The finial is cast in the shape of two rows of pointed leaves surrounding a bud. The edges of the shoulder and rim, and the background of the reliefs are matted.
