Description

Silver; modelled as a sow standing on a rectangular screw-on base; the tail formed by the spoon

Silver; the body modelled as a sow, with chased decoration resembling hair. The hinged cover formed from the back quarter. The four legs have screw attachments to the cut-corner rectangular base, which is embossed, chased and engraved with leaves and branches and stands on four acorn feet. The terminal of the mustard spoon is formed as a curly pig's tail. The blue glass liner may be of later manufacture.

Dating

19th Century, Late#
Victoria I
Production date: circa AD 1880

Note

Originally accessioned as London 1815, but at this date Thomas Phipps & Edward Robinson were in partnership with James Phipps II and using a different makers' mark. The date letter appears to be a small 'm' for London 1787-88, however, this is unusually early for animal-shaped mustard pots, and it is now thought that this mustard pot is a late 19th century fake.
