Description

Bronze. The sitter is facing the front with his head turned slightly to the left. His hair is parted in the cente and flows in wavy locks to the nape of the neck. He wears a cuirass and cravat. The bust is mounted on a gilt metal base which is supported on a column of Swedish porphyry, only found at Elfdalen. The base of the column is set in a gilt metal mount and stands on a shallow square porphyry base.

Notes

History note: Edward King, the antiquary (1738?-1807), and therefore must have been executed before 1807; Anne Windsor, Lady Plymouth, his adopted daughter; A.A. Vansittart, great-nephew of Lady Plymouth; given by the Hon. Mrs Vansittart to Mr W. Aldis Wright, Trinity College, Cambridge; c.1903 given by Mr Wright to the National Portrait Gallery, London, where it was accepted as a bust of Prince Charles Edward Stuart; 18th August, 1906, letter from L. Loostrom, Director of the National Museum, Stockholm, stating it to be identical to the bust in that museum, which represents Gustavus IV Adolphus, the work of Johan Tobias Sergel, and dated 1798, and also mounted on a similar pedestal of porphyry; 1907 given by Mr W. Aldis Wright to the Fitzwilliam Museum.
