A study for the portrait of 'Platoff's Charger and Four Cossacks' (1815) in the collection of the Duke of Northumberland. An almost identical study, with Christopher Powney in 1968 is additionally inscribed 'It was stated that this man killed / 14 frenchmen one morn.g before breakfast' ('Early Drawings', July 1968 (23)). A full-length study pose of the sitter is in the Ashmolean Museum (see David Blayney Brown, 1982, no. 1859, pl. 521); a highly finished watercolour of the sitter's head and shoulders was on the London Art Market in 1977 (Sotheby's, March 24 1977, lot 154).
