The Villa Salicati, the town of Naples below and Vesuvius beyond
Draughtsman: Williams, Hugh William (Grecian Williams)
From the Fairhaven Fund.
Height: 430 mm
Width: 673 mm
Relative size of this object is displayed using code inspired by Good Form and Spectacle's work on the British Museum's Waddeson Bequest website and their dimension drawer. They chose a tennis ball to represent a universally sized object, from which you could envisage the size of an object.
Method of acquisition: Bought (1985) by Gregory, Martin
Production date: AD 1817 : Williams left for Italy and Greece in 1816, and arrived in Naples in January 1817. This drawing, apparently dated 7 June, and PD.18-1988, dated 27 June 1817 would seem to indicate that he remained in the area for around six months.
