Note

This is a preparatory study for the judge who sits on the throne at the left of the painting which Cope submitted to the competition held in 1843 to design a series of frescoes to decorate the Houses of Parliament. Although Cope won the competition, the design was not used, as preference was given to subjects illustrating aspects of Parliamentary history. The prize-winning cartoon to which this drawing relates is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum; it was subsequently made into a lithograph by John Linnell.
