Rectangular box with cut corners in wood from H.M.S. Victory, lined and mounted in silver; the flat lid with plaque inscribed "Nelson"
Wood (probably oak) from the H.M.S. Victory, lined and mounted in silver. Rectangular with cut corners, straight sides, recessed hinge and arched thumbpiece. Set on the flat lid is a rectangular silver plaque, also with cut corners, which is inscribed 'Nelson' in Gothic script and 'Natus 29 Septr. 1758 / Obit 24 Octr. 1805' in script. On the recessed base, a similar smaller plaque is inscribed in Gothic script 'The Countess Mengden. / TO / Captn. Thos. Staines / R.N. K.G.B.' The interior of the lid is inscribed 'Presented to / THE FITZWILLIAM MUSEUM. / Cambridge / BY GEORGE GUNNING ESQR / of Frindsburg. Kent. / 1836'.
