Oval, horn box pressed with a vignette of men drinking in a garden
Horn, carved and pressed. Oval with straight sides. The top of the pull-off lid depicting four men drinking in a garden; a maid carries a large jug to their table on which stands a punch bowl and pipes. The initials 'SL' are pressed beneath the foot of the seated drinker.

Relative size of this object is displayed using code inspired by Good Form and Spectacle's work on the British Museum's Waddeson Bequest website and their dimension drawer. They chose a tennis ball to represent a universally sized object, from which you could envisage the size of an object.

Carving : The base, sides and lid were carved from horn. The pieces were then heated and pressed to form flat sheets, moulding or pressed patterns before being glued to form a box, which was then stained, possibly to resemble bronze.
