Description

White earthenware, moulded, decorated with coloured transfer prints under a slightly blue-green, crazed glaze. Blue, yellow and red with a brown key plate. Circular with a sloping rim, flat central area and recessed base. 'The Bully', after William Mulready, R.A., inscribed 'W MULREADY RA PINX' and signed 'J AUSTIN SCULP'. Encircled by a narrow border of conjoined bell flowers; outer oak leaf and acorn border on a grey-green ground.

Engraving after original painting 'The Wolf and the Lamb' by W. Mulready, illustrated in the Art Journal for 1856, p. 36. Engraved by C.W. Sharpe, though an engraving by J.H. Robinson had been published earlier but the plate destroyed. Size of painting 2ft x 1ft 8in.
