History note: The artist; bequeathed to his only daughter, Mrs Isabella Cloe Benjamin; acquired by the Hon. George Neville, later Neville Granville, Dean of Windsor, c. 1825; by descent to Mrs Maitland; Lady Longmore; 2nd Series bt. from Lady Longmore in 1936 for the Museum by two anonymous Friends of the Fitzwilliam and by the N.A.C.F.

  • Text: Hinchcliffe was the son of a Livery / stable keeper, and was educated at westminster / of which school he was appointed Head / Master in 1764, through the partronage of the Duke of Grafton. He married the sister of his liberal / friend and pupil Mr Crewe. / H. had been employed by the / latter to persuade the lady not to entertain the suit of an Officer / of the Guards, & he did this so effectually that the lady graciously listened / to his own & bestowed on him a hand that carried a large fortune with it. / He acquired the surname of the "Bloody Bishop in 1774 being the only member of the episcopal Bench / who supported severe measures against the Arminians. He died 1794, aged 63 - Dr Dorrans note in H. Walpole's last Journal.
