Description

The Howard Medal was established by the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1872 from a bequest of Thomas Howard, an investigator into steam technology. It is still awarded today, in the words of the Institution's website, "to the author of a Paper on any of the uses or properties of iron or steel or associated process development. (In modern practice, this is taken to mean any paper on structural engineering)." The current award however does not look like this piece, which is a bronze specimen of a proposed new design by Allan Gairdner Wyon. In the event the design was not adopted, making this piece a rare and attractive singleton.
