Thomas Scott-Ellis, the 8th Baron Howard de Walden, was as well as being a peer of the realm, a motorboat racer and a collector of armour, a playwright and patron of the theatre. Thus it was that he established in 1931 a prize with the Royal Academy of Music to be awarded annually for best performance in drama at the Academy. The prize is still awarded today, and takes the form of a bronze medal designed by Allan Gairdner Wyon. This example is a specimen of the design in bronze from Wyon's workshop.
