Description

The Royal Geographical Society established the award of a gold Patron's Medal in 1839 on the basis of a gift of King William IV. It is awarded annually "for the encouragement and promotion of geographical science and discovery". In 1923 the original design was updated to this new version by Allan Gairdner Wyon, after the original design by his ancestor William Wyon. This example is a white metal specimen of the design from Wyon's workshop, which was at some point probably secured to a display board using the black resin that still adheres to the reverse.
