Description

Sir Jamshedji Jeejeebhoy was one of the more ambivalent figures of British India. After amassing a fortune trading opium to China he was created first Baronet of Bombay by the British in 1843. After this time however he sunk much of his money into good works in what is now Mumbai, where a famous hospital and several schools bear his name. One of these is the Sir Jamshedji Jeejeebhoy School of Art, founded in 1857. There, every year, is still awarded the Dolly Cursetjee Prize for Drawing, for which this is the medal, designed by Allan Gairdner Wyon. This example is the designer's own specimen.
