Description

The Lloyd's Medal was instituted in 1839 as one of a number of public rewards and benefactions regularly made by the renowned maritime insurers. This one was awarded to those who saved, or attempted to save, the lives of others in shipwrecks, and who would take no monetary reward for so doing. It was designed by William Wyon, of the Royal Academy, and depicts the sea-nymph Leucothea rescuing Ulysses from shipwreck as described in the Odyssey. The design was later updated by Allan Wyon and the Museum also has a workshop specimen of that version, but this is a specimen of the original medal.
