Description

The Lloyd's Medal was instituted in 1839 as one of a number of public rewards and benefactions regularly made by the renowned maritime insurers. This one was awarded to those who saved, or attempted to save, the lives of others in shipwrecks, and who would take no monetary reward for so doing. The original award medal was designed by William Wyon, of the Royal Academy, and depicts the sea-nymph Leucothea rescuing Ulysses from shipwreck as described in the Odyssey, and the Museum also has a specimen of that era, but the design was later updated by Allan Wyon and this is a specimen of his design from his workshop.
