Description

Bowl, stoneware, thrown and celadon-glazed. The cylindrical bowl is very slightly constricted at the mouth, and has a low but well-defined footring. The thinly potted body is of fine clay and has a jade-coloured glaze with a subtle gloss. There are three quartzite spur-marks on the base.

Note

Bowls of this kind were used for tea or wine, and were occasionally furnished with a cover. The aesthetic ideals embodied in this cup are those that inform the celadons made in kiln no.7 at Sadang-ri, Kangjin-gun, South Cholla province during the reign of King Injong (1122-46).

Probably Sadang-ri ware.
