Description

Stoneware, thrown, luted and celadon-glazed. This is a well-shaped set, the round-bodied cup with a slightly incurved mouth, and a small foot, and the stand with a broad everted rim, a domed support for the cup, and a wide foot which gives it a stable appearance. The set is of fine clay and thinly potted; the glaze has a clear jade colour with a subtle gloss, is evenly applied and has almost no crackle. The bases of both cup and stand show small quartzite spur-marks.

Note

Sadang-ri or Yuch'on-ri ware.

Sets like this one, which is a very fine example, were used for wine in the literary circles of the Koryo aristocracy, where their excellent quality was deemed a suitable enhancement of the elated company. Metalwork examples also exist. The pleasing proportions, the thin body and the clear jade-green glaze all suggest that this piece was made in the most flourishing period of Koryo celadon in kiln no.7, at Sadang-ri, Kangjin-gun, South Cholla province, or in kiln no.12 at Yuch'on-ri, Puan-gun, North Cholla province.
