Kwanggubyong
Pottery: Unknown (Probably)
Bottle with foliage. Stoneware, thrown, painted in iron-oxide, and celadon-glazed. This bottle has a slender neck with cupped angled mouth, and a tall body which tapers gradually towards the foot. The concave base merges with the footring. The upper part of the body is decorated with two freely painted sprays of foliage in brown iron-oxide. The body is coarse and on the unglazed base has fired a reddish colour. The glaze is greenish-brown, glossy, and thinly applied; it contains sandy particles, has a fine crackle, and has in places discoloured round the lower part of the body. There are fire-clay spur-marks on the footring.

This type of wide-mouthed bottle (kwanggubyong) developed from the long-necked bottles of the Unified Silla period, which were used for wine or oil. Sherds of this type have been found at kiln sites in the area of Chinsan-ri, Haenam-gun, South Cholla province, where this bottle was probably made.
