Description

Bowl with lychee design. Stoneware, thrown, inlaid in black and white slip and celadon-glazed. This deep bowl is of hemispherical shape and its footring is lower on the inside than the outside, following the model from Jingdezhen. The inside is inlaid in white slip with a single chrysanthemum floret in the centre, four sprays of lychee round the sides and a 'grass' border at the rim. The outside is inlaid in black and white slip with chrysanthemum medallions alternating with chrysanthemum florets below, and white horizontal lines. The body is thick and heavy and the glaze uneven, of a greyish to brownish green and with little crackle. There are three large quartzite spur-marks on the base, and the bowl has been repaired with gold lacquer.
