Description

Bowl with chrysanthemum and lychee design. Stoneware, thrown, inlaid in black and white slip and celadon-glazed. The mouth of this hemispherical bowl is slightly incurved in the fashion current in the late thirteenth and early four-teenth century. The centre of the bowl is slightly recessed. The bowl is decorated in white inlaid slip with details in black, with three stylised chrysanthemum florets in the centre and a youi-head border around it, four sprays of lychee as the main motif, and a classic-scroll border and a border of cranes and florets below the rim. On the outside is a band of scrollwork (posang tangch'o) with four chrysanthemum-spray medallions, enclosed by a classic-scroll border and chrysanthemum florets. The glaze is grey-green, evenly applied, and has a fine crackle. There are traces from a coarse sandy support on the foot.
